The following memorial to
the Provincial Government,
were drawn up by the commit-
-tee appointed at the public
meeting held at Oamaru on the
4th instant and are now in Con
of Signature:—
To the Honorable the provin-
-cial Council of the Province
Of Otago, New Zealand,
The humble Petition of the
Undersigned Inhabitants
of the Town of Oamaru and
The Waitaki District.
Sheweth —
I.That whare as the Port of Oamaru
needs and is Supposed to be capa-
-ble of much improvement so
as to render if a safe and conve-
-ment Harbour.
2. And Where as the district
of which the said Port is the on that
has very great natural advant-
-ges for Agricultural and Pas-
-toral purposes-probably great
-er than any oher District in
the Provinces :—
3. And Where as the diffient-
-ties and Expenses attendant
Upon the Shipment of produce
have become a very serious draw-
-back to agricultural pursuits &
Proportioncitely affect the
of the finesh Land in the province:
4. And where as the trade of the
Port has already reached a point
of Considerable importance —
The Export of Wool amounting
To Five Thousand Bales and the
Imports to Probably not less than
7,000 tons of merchandise per
annum and both Imports and
Exports are rapidly increasing:
5. And whereas if proper fa—
cilities were given for shipping
wool and landing goods a large
proportion of the trade of the
southern portion of the Province
of Canterbury would pass thro-
-ugh the port of Oamaru :—
And Where as the large sums of
money already contributed to
the revenue of the Province and get
to be contributed by the large sales
of land at high prices in the
Oamaru and Otepops Districts
as well as from the large consum-
ption of dutiable articles ren-
-der the claims of these districts
Worthy of the careful considera-
-tion of your Honorable council.
Your petitioners do humbly
pray that a Commission be
forth with appointed to consider
and decide on the proper one and
to be used for the improvement
of the Nartown at Oamaru,
and to report thereon to your
Honorable Council.
And your Petitioners will

the Town of Oamaru and of
the Waitaki District.
Shewith —
1. That where as Sunday
improvements are needed in the
Town and Distric for which
the aid of the Government is
required:—
2. and Whereas the large reve-
-nue derived from the sales of
Land in the said Town and Dis-
-trict Entitle the inhabitants to
Expect a larger share of such
aid than has hitherto been ac-
-corded :—
3 And whereas large sums
of money have been Expended
to the detriment of the Northern
port of the Province by Opening
a direct Land Communication
between the Capital and the
Dunstan and adjacent Gold-
fields, this threatening to draw
off not only the whole trade with
the Gold fields fish also a portion
of the Exports of Wool from the
said port
Your petitioners do humbly
request the attention of your
Honorable Council to the fol-
-lowing more immediate require-
-ments of the said Town and Dis
-trict with a view to the granting
Of such sums of money as may be
Justly applicable for th pur-
-poses indicated.
1. Main line of rose along the
Waitaki.That this important
Line of communication with the
Various sheep stations and with
the Upper Goldfields, be at once
Completed, by bridging the
Whare kuri which will do away
at a small cost with the only
difficult point on the road.
2.Roa d betwe en Otepops and
Oamaru. That this line of
road being an imfortant means
of Communication with Buch
and with the new Journship of
Herbert be completed by recheving
The gradient in several steep
Places and metalling where
required to render if passable
For heavy traffic during the
Winter months.
3. Formation of Server Street.
that that part of the main line of
Road to the North which passes
through the Township be complet-
-ed by the formation of sevenstreet,
as laid down in the plan of the
Township. The gradient being
Every way suitable for the pur-
-pose and many parties having
long since purchased sections ad-
jacent to the proposed line of road
at high prices on the faith of
severa street being formed are
now much inconvenienced by
the want of proper communica-
-tion with their properties and
from the levels not being taken
are prevented from building.
4. Means of Communication
With the Beach. That Arun
Street be formed from the Beach
to June Street and that Jyne
Street becontinued to its June-
-tion with Arun street in order
to complete the line of communi-
Cation with the Beach as originally
laid down in the plan s of th e Town
ship the present line being made
across the Esplanade Reserve,
preventing the completion of the
fencing round said Reserve.
5. Completion of server and
fencing of Esplanade .That a
sum of money be placed at the
disposal of the Town Board,suf
-ficient will Jyne street along
Server from its present line of
function will Jyne street along
the whole length of th at street and
also a sufficient come to complete
the fencing of the Esplanade.
6. Cemetery Reserve that
the Cemetery Reserve be fined
and Trusties appointed as re-
-quired by law.
7. Crown grants. That an
Address be presented to his
Honor the Superinten dark,
respectfully requesting him to
Obtain and place in possession
of the Town Board as Early as
Possible the Crown grants for
the municipal properties together
With the requisites powers of
Lensing said properties for
Periods of seven years.And also
To place in possession of the Edu-
-cation at committee the like
grants and powers with respect
to the Educational Reserves
And Your Petitioners will
Ever Pray.
