Labour Report.
Messrs. R. M. Heighton and Co. re pon: —
The past month has been slow in demand for labour, and the supply has been fairly good. First-class hands with references of good service, commanding good, current wages and well sought for. Second- and third-class hands plentiful, and few demands for this class of labour or help. Engagements made Farm Couples usual rates; groom and gardener, 20/- ; gentlemen’s service, 20/-; milkers, 15/to 25/- ; farm hands, 12/- to 20/- ; boys and youths, 6/- to 13/-. Employers are wanted for numerous hands.
The employers of labour complain strongly of the heavy cost of passenger transit in our State railways and crave for free State railways and motor feeders and distributors, run from the State funds. The cost per head to the population and visitors would be a mere trifle and would not be felt or noticed, and would completely dispense with the ticket and ticket department and its many thousands of pounds and inconviences, and drastic worry and corruption in our State railways.
