Mangonui County Council.

The annual meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers on November '23rd, 1904, when there were present Councillors Wilkinson, Bray, Subritzky, Evans, Thompson and Powell. This being the annual meeting the Clerk (Mr. Hams) took the chair. Resolved that Mr. Wilkinson be Chairman for the ensuing year. vj . i Resolved that Messrs. Powell and Br/iy represent the Council on the North Auckland Charitable Aid Board. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Resolved that Mr. Roebuck’s application be granted, viz., the Council to grant £lO and Mr. Roebuck £3O towards cutting a bridle track into Mr. Roebuck’s selection. Resolved that the Chairman have power to call for and accept tenders for Roebuck’s road.

Resolved that the Roads Department he again written to re Frear s road.

Resolved that Ramaka Shepherd be paid 20/- for repairing and putting in good order the road over l the swamp to Kenana.

Letter received from Mr. J. M. Reid, asking for the alienation of an area of land from the gum reserve between Hukatere and To Kao. Resolved that the Land Board he advised to lift the land mentioned from the gum reserve.

Petition was received from J. Mills and thers, asking- for a reduction of the

wheel tax. Resolved that same be acknowledged, and that according to the County by-laws the Council has no power to make any reduction in the license fee. Letter was received from Mrs, Williams, asking for a reinstatement of ths Charitable Aid as previously granted. Resolved that Mrs. Williams be granted 10/- per week.

Resolved that Lutener’s line as surveyed be the road to the Cable Station. Resolved that the Clerk write the Roads Department, asking them to hasten the grading of Roebuck’s road. Resolved that application he made to the Minister for Lands, for £2O as promised towards the construction of the Redan bridge, Kaitaia. Letter from H. King re road. Resolved that letter be acknowledged and he be informed that the Council will make enquiries about the same and communicate with him later.

Letter from the Valuation Department re the appointment of an assessor. Resolved that the Department be informed that this Council is in favour of being privileged to nominate an assessor.

Letter from Mr. Buckingham re erecting a swing gate. * Resolved that Mr. Buckingham be informed that this Council have no objection to him erecting a gate if done forthwith. t * Resolved that Mr. Herstlet be’JdloWed 40/- towards cost of work done on thfefci Cable road. Resolved that letter from Natives at Okaihau be received.

Resolved that the following agreements be signed:—Kaitaia-Awanui and KaitaiaVictoria Valley road, £150; Kaitaia Creamery metalling, £SO; Fairbum road, Victoria Valley to Peria, £IOO, Resolved that the Chairman write the Government re granting the Council old rails for tramway from Kaitaia road into the quarry. Resolved that Councillor Thompson’s resignation be accepted. Resolved that . Wm. Thompson he appointed road engineer for the ensuing year at a salary of £6O per annum. Resolved that the police be appointed as ranger for the collection of gum. vehicle and dog taxes, at a remuneration of 10 per cent, for gum and vehicle licenses and 1/- per dog, and that instructions be issued to sue forthwith all who have not been duly licensed. An amendment on the foregoing, that applications be invited for the collecting of the gum, vehicle and dog tax at a remuneration of 10 per cent, was lost. Resolved that the matter of the ejecting of Austrians illegally, in the occupation of sections at Lake Ohia, be left in the hands of Councillors Powell and Subritzky.

Resolved that the Clerk wire the Land Board, and query as to whether Sulenta has taken up land ait Ohia. Resolved that Councillor Powell have power to erect three finger-posts. Resolved that steps be taken to have wharf dues by-laws gazetted, Resolved that the wharfinger’s hours should he from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. the day following arrival of steamer, and that on Saturday he be granted half a day holiday. Resolved that Mr. W. J. Harris be asked to continue in his duties as clerk for the ensuing year. Appointment confirmed.

Resolved that standing orders as read be adopted, and that. 50 copies be printed. This concluded the business.
