Wanted—An Industrious Population.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln tlie “Dargaville Times” it is stated that .several Austrians left for their native country, they bavin# accumulated a large sum of money—one had saved £IOOO iu seven years’ gum-dig-ging. : Now, sir, we who come from Europe know that these men would never return there if they were welcomed and encouraged to settle here, We hear a great deal about the wants of the country. I maintain that the great want of the country is an industrious population to settle on the land, and a policy which drives away industrious, ablebodied men, denying them land and naturalisation and causing them to return to Europe and cany their savings with them, is a curse to us all.—Yours truly,

JAMES E. HOLMES, Ohaewai, 19th November, 1904.
