Labour Report.
Doings for Month of4)ct<|je)r|
Messrs. R. M. Heighton and Co. report '.—This month not much of a stirring nature has transpired referring to the labour market. There have been some few arrivals from England, the Cape, the Australian colonies, and other parts of New Zealand. These included many trades of various characters, and some farm hands, the best of which were soon placed, as last month.
The demand for good plowmen and general farm hands continues steady. There is little or no demand for inferior help, there, being a glut in the market. Engagements have been as follows: Plowman 20/-, milkers 12/- to 25/-, bushmen 1/- per hour, general farm hands 16/- to 20/-, youths and garden laborers 11/- to 15/-.
Our free registra contains unemployed faim couples, station hands, laborers, butchers, grooms, gardeners, etc. Female department—Housekeepers, housemaids, governesses, waitresses, etc. Tb*re 4 *iA ajp|iu demand all round for the State ijiijway to be run free for passenger transit, the expenses to be taken from the general revenue, and dispense with the useless ticket officials, and its corruption, and save many thousands a year. This would enable the back settler to employ a better class of lalxmr which would be enabled to reach the inland towns and settlements without the burden of the ticket business.
