Wharfage Dues.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —In the “ Mangonui Times” of August 25th, and contamed in the report of the Mangonui County Council’s meeting of August 18th, the following appears —“ Proposed by Cr. Bray, seconded by Cr. Powell, that all arrears of wharfage dues be sued for unless paid for by the end of September. (Carried).” Notwithstanding this decision I understand, on excellent authority, that there are several who have not paid the aforesaid wharfage dues. Seeing that the County Council passed the above resolution, how is it that they have not taken legal measures to enforce their decision ? The above jnethod of doing business is very unsatisfactory, and, while it brings the Council into disrepute, it also has a tendency to make others feel inclined to withstand the Council’s ruling. There cannot he two laws whereby one person pays and the other gets off “ Scot free.” If the Council’s resolution is a legal one, then they should see that it is properly carried out. If, as is suggested, there is a flaw in the ruling, then the sooner the matter is settled the better. Perhaps our worthy Chairman of the County Council can throw some light on this very ambiguous state of affairs. Thanking you, Mr. Editor, for your valuable space, I am yours truly FAIR PLAY.
