Gentlemen —Having determined not to call upon my friends for those exertions at tho ensuing election to which they had so kindly pledged themselves on my behalf, a brief explanation of my reasons for taking thw stop becomes indispensable. A requisition, numerously signed by electors of all classes and all shades of political opinions, having been presented to me, I very reluctantly complied with their request, having previously ascertained that none of thoso gentlemen, •whoso local standing or political influence would have secured- tho preference of ths electors, were disposed to • come forward. On the day of nomination, Mr. Parker, ono of thoso who had previously refused to stand, was put in nomination: an active canvas 3 commenced ; and'his friends, going from houso to house, demanded and obtained written pledges for Mr. Parker from many of thoso who, but a few days previous, had pledged themselves to support me!!! Coinciding, as I do, in my political views with my friend Mr. Fearon, who (unanimously elected a few weeks ago) has supported mo throughout, I know not to what to attribute this extraordinary conduct on •the part of so many of tho elcctbrs towards me. But " such is tho state of things in Motueka," that I begin to think (for tho first limo in my life) that "tho ballot" is becoming necessary, not for tho protection of tho poor man —tho cry so piteously advocated in England —but to givo to tho educated classes "fair play," of which their position now seems to deprivo thorn! However, whilst only too glad to avoid tho responsibility I -was willing to inour from a Brnso of public duty, I canr.ot forbear expressing tho pity I fed for those pliant electors who have thus allowed me a loop-hole for escape, by Bhowing mo bo bright a sample of tho cobstituency: whilst my especial thanks are duo to others, and amongst them some of our legislators, who publicly sanction and maintain that written pledges given ono. day, may be recalled tho next, should it suit tho purpose or inclination of any ono to do bo. Feeling, therefore, that the mutual confidence which should subsist betwixt a representative and his constituents is at an end, and lhat I can no longer hope to ropresent your district in the General Assembly with advantage to you or credit to myself, my only object in keeping open tho poll on tho day of election will bo, to allow thoso electors who have signed my requisition an opportunity of recording their votes against mo, shoulcLHiey feel disposed to do bo. Sincerely thanWng thoso gentlemen on whoso support I might stjll implicitly rely, , / I remain, v y Gentlemen, ,• , Your obedient humblo servant, „ p E. D. Salisbury. Motttek*, Oot. 30,1855. ©obernment $otta, IN accordance with the Proclamation of his Excellency tho Governor, dated 3rd November inßtant, tho Court House, Nelson, is an additional POLLING PLACE for the Election of Members for the Motueka and Massacro Ba/ Districts, on Thursday, the Bth instant. / John Poynteh, ' Principal Returning Officer. Nelson, 6th Novombor, 1855.
