ENGLISH INTELLIGENCE.
We have received, by the kindness of Captain, Shell, of the Eagle, English papers to the 16th of January. On the following day, the 17th, Prince Albert was to lay- the first stone of the new Royal Exchange, and the papers contain a programme of the procession and formalities on the occasion. The day for the celebration of the christening of the young Duke of Cornwall was the 25th of January The ceremony was to take place at Windsor Castle. The King of Prussia was expected to arrive'on the 20th. There were to be grand doings on the occasion. The King of Prussia's present to his godson, it was said, would be " a splendid royal mantle lined with "ermine, decorated with the star of the order of the Black Eagle, formed of brilliants and other jewels of the first water." Immediately after Jhe royal christening a batch of peers and baronets was to be created. We refer our readers to the English extracts in the Examiner of the 28th of May as a fitting comment on the splendour with which this event is to be celsbrated. We have not the patience, however, to give them the chance of revelling, should they be so inclined, in the detailed account of "equipages, hangings, decorations, banquetings, ct hoc genus omne. Judge Bosanquet had resigned, in consequence of ill health. His successor was not yet known. Meeting of Parliament. — The following is a coj.y of the circular addressed to the Conservative members : — " Whitehall, Jan. 5, 1842. " Sir — The meeting of Parliament being fixed for Thursday, the 3d of February, I take the liberty of informing you that public business of importance will be immediately proceeded with. Permit me to hope that it may be consistent with your convenience to give your attendance in the House of Commons on that day. " I have the honour to be, sir, " Your most faithful and obedient servant, " Robert Peel/ 5 The principles of. Puseyism, with whi^h it is known that many of the clergy around Birmingham are deeply tainted, have manifested themselves openly in the case of an incumbent of one of the churches there, who has introduced a gilt cross over the communion table, before which the reverend gentleman bows and bends his knee, according to the canons of the Catholic church. Canada. — There is evidently a set of miscreants upon the borders who are determined, if possible, to plunge the two countries into a war ; but it cannot be doubted that many who are concerned in these outrages are Canadian! outlaws, although they perpetrate their ruffian acts under the name of Americans. Whoever they are, whether our own villainous citizens or foreign vagabonds, it is the bounden duty of the American authorities to take such measures as will bring all concerned to a summary punishment. The recent acts of incendiarism have naturally created a feeling of deep indignation in Canada, and they threaten a retaliation in kind. Should they carry their threats into"execution, and there is every reason to fear they may should the atrocities from the American side continue, what could we say ? It is fearful to think of the consequences which may result from the condition of things on the frontier, and ' it is earnestly hoped that prompt and energetic measures will be taken to put a stop to these outrages. — Daily Express.
