NELSON LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC ASSOCIATION.

Pursuant to the advertisement which appeared in our labt number, a meeting was held at uvj o'clock on Monday last, at the Surveyor.s'{Office, for the purpose of appointing officers and revising the rules of the above-named institution. The meeting was very fully attended, and the discussion carried on with much animation. A draft of regulations, prepared by Mr. Macshane, was submitted for consideration ; but, as it was j found that the meeting was too numerous for j entering into the consideration of such details, j it was resolved to refer them to a committee, which, as will appear by the advertisement in i another column, was then appointed. The meeting, however, passed the five following rules, as a guide to the committee for the general principles on which the regulations of the society were to be framed :—: — 1. That the society should be called the Nelson Literary and Scientific Association. 2. That all persons above the age of fifteen years should be eligible as members of this society. 3. That the election of a member should be by ballot, one^black ball m six to exclude. 4. That the entrance fee be two guineas, and the annual subscription one guinea. 5. That the institution should not for the present circulate its books, but that the committee be empowered to procure a read-ing-room for the accommodation of the members. A warm discussion arose on the third regulation, some members wishing that the society should be open to all, without restriction. A majority, however, of the meeting determined in favour of the regulation as it now stands. The meeting then broke up. Our readers are aware that the New Zealand Company have voted the sum of £100 to this institution. The subscription raised in the colony already amounts £1 80. Some discussion took place as to the propriety of immediately erecting a building for the institution, and it was ultimately resolved that the matter should be referred to the committee.
