PORT NICHOLSON.
We have received New Zealand Gazettes to the 19th instant. We perceive that the view which our contemporary takes of the Corporation Bill, of the opposition of the " independent" members, and the protest of Mr. Earp, is very similar to our own. We make some extracts ; but it is too late this week to enter into any lengthened notice of many matters made mention of in which both Port Nicholson and Nelson Haven are so much interested. The ?rospectus of a new paper to be established at tot Nicholson, and tb be entitled the New Zealand Colonist, and Port Nicholson Advertiser, appears in the Gazette of the 16th as an advertisement. The Vanguard hail arrived from this place. Mr. J. E. Wakefield's journal of his trip into the Taupo country appears in the columns of our contemporary, and seems to be a very interesting communication. The second exhibition of the Agricultural Society was to take place on Tuesday the 22d instant. Mr. Sheppard, the colonial treasurer, was at Port Nicholson, and likely to remain some time. The land mark, erected at the eastern entrance to the harbour, had been blown down. About 40,000 acres of land will be given out to the holders of preliminary orders, on the 7th of next month. There will then remain between 20,000 and 30,000 acres to be distributed among the same parties. While Captain Smith is occupied in completing the Manewatu surveys, preparing maps, &c, his successor, Mr. Brees, is exploring and taking levels of the country round Port Nicholson, with the view of making roads to Karori and elsewhere.
