"MA” WOULD PREACH
The Rev. Hugh Price Hughes, a famed Wesleyan divine in Victorian days, when "starring” among the chapels of | the United States, was everywhere described as "The Rev. Hugh Price Hughes. M.A.” This was flaunted on chapel doors and gave an air of dig- ! nity to the small bills circulated - amongst the congregations. One day it tell to the lot of a deacon in a rustic ! district to announce the approach of the celebrated London divine. "On j Sunday next.” he said, carefully scan- { ning the written announcement with j which he had been provided, "the Rev Hugh Price Hugh’s Ma will occupy the j pulpit in this church, and.” he added - looking cheerfully and hopefully round the congregation, “we have no doubt the old lady will give us a telling dis- § j course.”
