CONVOY REACHES BRITAIN
SAFE ATLANTIC CROSSING ATTACKS BY U-BOATS FOILED London, Oct. 17. A big Atlantic convoy has reached British waters safely after four days of battling with a pack of submarines. Its safety was due to the combined efforts of the Navy, the Royal Air Force and United States naval aircraft. At least eight attempts on the ships were foiled in the four days. The presence of U-boats was detected by long-range reconnaissance craft. Next day the number of submarines had increased and, just when an attack seemed imminent, bombs were dropped Which forced the U-boats to crash-dive. The same afternoon another submarine had to crash-dive when a Liberator approached. Later the same aircraft forced a second U-boat to submarge. Within an hour it dropped a bomb in the path of a third U-boat and machine-gunned its conning tower. After a fourth U-boat had been at* tacked oil and air bubbles and wreckage were seen on the surface. In the evening two American Cataiinas each attacked a submarine. Only two U-boats were seen the following day. One was attacked by a Hudson and the other crash-dived. Twenty-four hours later the convoy was safe.—P.A.
