BABY LOST
TRAGEDY IN CONVOY London, Sept. 30. A baby born to the wife .of a Russian engineer on the return trip of the recent Arctic convoy, was drowned the day alter birth On 15th September. while guns on the deck of the ship blazed at attacking planes, and naval guns and depth charges thundered, the baby was born to Madame Morosova. 25, in the ship's cabin. Next day, the ship was + orpedoed. While the mother was carried on deck on a stretcher, the father ripped the top from a suitcase and placed the child in it. Ropes were tied round the suitcase, and it was lowered from the deck of the sinking ship into a lifeboat. As the men in the lifeboat lifted hands to receive the baby a wave carried the lifeboat away from the side of the ship, and almost at the same time the vessel tilted over, and the suitcase struck the side of the ship and the child fell into the sea. It way picked up after a minute in the water, but the shock killed it. The mother is now recovering in a Glasgow hospital.
