TIP-AND-RUN RAIDS ON MALTA EIGHT ENEMY PLANES SHOT DOWN 'Rec. 9.45 a.m.) Rugby, Oct. 19. British fighters destroyed eight more aircraft at Malta yesterday. The enemy’s air offensive, however, has eased considerably.- and most of the attacks are only furtive tip-and-run raids on aerodromes. From 11th October to yesterday the enemy lost 112 aircraft. | A communique states: “Air activity [around Malta continued although the [enemy inflicted very little damage. ! Our long-range fighters on offensive patrol over Sicilj' shot down a Heinkel 111. while fighters inland destroyed two j Melo9's. We lost one aircraft during S these operations but the pilot is safe. ’ WEEK’S TOLL OF RAIDERS (Rec. 9.45 a.m.) Rugby, Oct. 19. In the week ended 17th October the enemy lost 114 aircraft in the assault on Malta for the British loss of 27 I Soitfires with 14 pilots saved. The enemy made some 1.400 sorties against the island and therefore approximately one hostile aircraft in 13 which set out from Sicily failed to return. This takes no account of the scores of others so crippled that they had little hope of [ getting home. Never before had pilots | destroyed so many enemy in one week i around Malta. —8.0. W. ———
