PORTRAIT OF CHRIST

CLAIMED TO BE BY CONTEMPORARY FOUND IN PRIVATE ITALIAN COLLECTION (Rec. 1.55 p.m.) London, Oct. 16. What is claimed to be an authentic portrait of Christ was found in an Italian private collection, according to “Giornale d’ltalia,” which says it is the work of a contemporary artist who probably witnessed the crucifixion. Professor Rostovgeff found the portrait, which was on a medallion, during excavations in Syria. Christ is represented on a cross look ing at his mother who is leaning against the cr*oss. St. John is standing beside her. The medallion is believed to have once belonged t 0 hte Apostle. There is an inscription on the back, “Si Of. - which Italian experts believe is an abbreviation of the engraver's name, also two Roman sixes meaning the sixth hour of Christ’s sufferings. The owner is Madame Della Paolera who is stated to have been offered £300,000 for the medallion by a Chilean collector.—P.A.
