NEW ZEALAND-GROWN ORANGES
HIGH PRICES EXPLAINED BY MINISTER [From Our Own Parliamentary Reporterl Wellington, This Day. Replying In the House of Representatives to an urgent question asked by Mr P. Carr (Government, Auckland West) and Mr A. G. Osborne (Government, Onehunga), the Minister of Marketing, Mr Barclay, reiterated the statement he had made previously that locally-grown oranges are sold and ! marketed through ordinary trading ! channels without control or superj vision by his Department. Mr Carr and Mr Osborne, in their question, complained of the extortionate prices for locally-grown oranges, and asked if steps would be taken to remedy the position in future. “Owing to the extreme difficulty being experienced by the Internal Marketing Division in securing regular shipments of oranges from any of the usual overseas sources of supply,” said the Minister, “existing circumstances enable the trade to secure the present high prices for the limited crop of a few hundred cases, which become available annually.”
