MINERS AND HOME GUARD
'To the Editor) j Sir.—l read with interest the criticism ; by the Awake New Zealand Campaign : They quote the case of farmers milking ! GO cows and w orking 12 to 14 hours a day and seven days a week Now. Sir. | I w ould like to istate the case of the I coal miner, and I live in a dairy district. The miner goes to work in wintc*r months in the dark and does not get home till dark at night. In the summer months he does see a little sun. The sun is a luxury to the miner. One only has to have a look at Him and see how white and pale he is compared with the man outside. Now. Sir. I live amongst these dairymen and I have vet to see one of these farmers do hi* 14 hours. The miner works 8 hours a day. and it is 8 hours swallowing dust and breathing smoke for 6 days of the week. I believe. Sir. if members of the Awake New Zealand Campaign were ti spend an hour or two in the mine thev are referring to. they would say, "Yes. the miner should be exempt from Home Guard duties.”—l am. etc COALMINER.
