WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Mrs Price presided over a good attendance of members at the October meeting of the Mapua Women’s Institute. Promises of contributions toward the Christmas hamper were solicited, and well responded to. Correspondence was read, including a letter of thanks from the Patriotic Committee for gifts sent in, and for which payment was received. An invitation was received from the Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Guild to a social afternoon and "bring and buy." i It was decided that the institute could not be •represented at the W.I. District Council meeting in Nelson on 23rd October as being Friday no service car is available by which to travel to a meeting held in the afternoon. Two competitions were judged, one. “A vase of flowers.” was won by Mrs S. Thomas, with Mrs Nash 2nd. and Mrs Price 3rd. For "something new from something old,” Mrs Perry came Ist (a rug), with Mrs Thomas 2nd (child’s frock), and Mrs JT. Williams and Mrs S. Thomas (equal) 3rd. 'both cardigans). Miss Walter kindly promised to give a demonstration of smocking at the November meeting. The roll call, a limerick on the institute was unfortunately poorly responded to. Two solos with her own accompaniment on the steel guitar were pleasingly rendered by Mrs Malcolm Wells. An amusing play-reading. "A jumble up on the radio,” was staged by Mesdames Perry. L. Wakefield. Clark. Price and Miss Walter Miss Walter also contributed two piano solos, which were much appreciated. The sucking-pig competition for patriotic purposes was won by Mr Austin.
