LABOUR FROM ARMY FOR SHEARING I OUTLINE OF PROCEDURE Christchurch, Sept. 2 Advice that the Government had ap proved of the release from the Army of shearers, musterers, experienced shed hands and shearers’ cooks for a period of j approximately 12 weeks for shearing was received by the North Canterbury I District Council of Primary Production in a letter from the Director of Prim i ary Production. The letter stated also I that district manpower officers had been j instructed to release 52 men from esi sential industries for shearing. • In all cases, except where their work I is of exceptional urgency, no men are to I be released from overseas units, and, in the case of men in key positions, the 1 Army is to have adequate time to effect j replacements, one month being sugI gested. The procedure for obtaining release of the men was outlined in the letter. The worker himself, or a farmer or trade union secretary on behalf of a specified worker, will lodge his application for release from the Army with the secretary of the Primary Pro-

duction Council, together with all avail able particulars. The council will consider the application without delay, having regard to the adequacy of the run of work arranged by applicant on hit own behalf or to the run of work which can be arranged for applicant.—P.A. MEN FOR DAIRYING INDUSTRY New Plymouth, Sept. 2. The War Cabinet has promised that the services of 800 men will be made available to the dairying industry in New Zealand to meet the present shortage of labour, according to information received to-day from the president of the Taranaki Dairying and Farming Industrial Union of Employers, Mr W. E. Scott, who is also a member of the Dairy Board. Mr Scott made representa tions regarding labour difficulties in dairy factories to certain Ministers of the Crown and to-day interviewed the War Cabinet. The War Cabinet has promised to make Taranaki’s requirements available immediately and has promised to arrange for the release from military camps of the men applied for.—P.A.
