THE DIEPPE RAID
ALLEGED TYING OF PRISONERS’ HANDS DENIAL BY WAR OFFICE (Rec. 11.30 a.m.) Rugby, Sept. 2. The War Office issued the following statement: “A German communique has stated that orders were given by the British in the Dieppe operations that prisoners’ hands should be lied to prevent them from destroying their papers. Investigations are being made as to whether in fact any such order was issued. It is categorically denied that any German prisoner had his hands tied and if any such order was issued it will be cancelled.”
This War Office communique followed a German announcement that the hands of British prisoners taken at Dieppe would be chained in retribution for the alleged tying of hands of German prisoners by the British.—B.O.W.
