JAPANESE FALLING BACK
FIGHTING IN CHINA London, Aug. 31. A Reuter report from Chungking says that the Japanese appear to be falling back to the positions they held when thve began their drive against Marshal Chiang Kai-shek’s troops from the coast. Southern Chekiang is now reported to have been entirely cleared of the Japanese. Chungking reports that the Chinese have recaptured Sunyang, 40 miles west of tne air bases at Lishui, destroying half the defenders and driving the rest out. In the south Chinese columns are 30 miles north of Canton and are still advancing. The Chinese are hurrying to restore the air bases in the “bomb-Tokio” provinces. Work has begun on the two important airfields which have been recaptured at Chuhsien and Lishui in Chekiang, and the Chinese have now advanced to a third base at Kinwha, capital of the province.—P.A.
