DEFENCES REINFORCED

AFTER RAID ON DIEPPE Stockholm, Aug. 29. It is reported from Berlin that after the British raid on Dieppe the Germans reinforced the Atlantic channel coast defences with the new motorised artillery batteries.—P.A. NAZI REPRISALS ON CIVILIANS New York, Aug. 29. Though the Germans publicly praised the residents of Dieppe for their attitude during the recent raid, reports from Paris reveal that the Germans actually shot 11 civilians and imprisoned several hundred immediately after the raid. This is reported by the “New York Times” Stockholm correspondent who adds that the victims were chosen from previously-prepared lists of persons “likely to sympathise actively with the enemy.” Many belonged to prominent Dieppe families. The German casualties in the raid are estimated at 600 killed or missing and 2000 wounded.— P.A.
