ANNUITY DOUBLED

MEAGRE PROVISION FOR WIDOW Sydney, July 27. When Mr William James Marsh, of Forbes, died ixi November last it was found that he had left an estate of £57,000 and had made provision that his widow should receive an annuity of £7 a week. Mrs Marsh applied to the Equity Court yesterday for an increased allowance. She is 72, having been 13 years younger than her husband. Mr Marsh was a grazier, and. according to an affidavit submitted by Mrs Marsh in support of her application, found comfort in the more rigid austerities. “All that one needs are a roof and a rug,” he told his wife when she spoke of carpets and linoleums.

Mrs Marsh said that the first home provided for her after marriage was an unlined log hut. When this was destroyed by fire they lived in a tent and later moved into a workman’s hut to which some minor additions were made.

Once when she purchased a clock her husband stopped her credit at the store. The arrival of a wireless set, purchased out of her own money, stirred him to fury, it being merely, in his opinion, a device for encouraging people to waste their time.

Mr Justice Roper increased the provision made for Mrs Marsh to double the amount expressed in the will.
