HOP-GROWERS AND FARMERS’ UNION
RECENT DISCUSSION The discussion relating to hops at the last executive meeting of Nelson Council of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, has been criticised by some hop growers. When the letter from the Hop Marketing Association to the council was read, Mr Beuke. associate member of the council, gave the views of his committee on the question. He stressed the fact that exception was taken by his committee to the absence of discussion by any delegate and the absence of any word raised in defence of the hop growing industry. He stated that the price of hops was fixed by the Price Tribunal at 2d per lb lower than the export price and that only the surplus, after satisfying New Zealand brewers’ requirements, could be exported. The quantity available for export varied with the volume of the crop grown, and was usually a very small percentage of the total crop. No grower could on his own account grow hops solely for export. The Hop Marketing Committee are, it is stated, in complete agreement with any restriction oil facilities for obtaining liquor that will check consumption of liquor by young girls in hotel lounges. _____
