NEWMAN SHIELD MATCH
WAIMEA DEFEAT MOTUEKA A. NEWMAN JUST MISSES CENTURY
The game for the Newman Shield between Motueka and Waimea was concluded on Saturday, Waimea winning easily by live wickets and 250 runs. A feature of the match was the fine all-round display of A. Newman. He knocked up 95 in Waimea’s second innings, and his bowling average was four wickets for 23 runs in the first innings and two for 20 in the second. He also brought off some dazzling catches, especially when he dismissed Parker off Giblin in Motueka’s second strike.
The first day’s play was marred by cold showers, Motueka being unfortunately placed with a wet ball. Papps (captain), Waimea, won the toss from Ryder and Waimea had first use of the wicket which was heavy and slow. Had Motueka made use of the catches given Waimea’s score in the first innings would have been much smaller, as Jenkins, Papps, Giblin, and Hawkes were often dropped. Motueka were sadly lacking in bowlers; their batting was very sound but they found it hard to make i - uns against Waimea’s attack, comprised of Lines, Giblin, Davies, Newman and Hawkes. Motueka’s attack relied chiefly on Sixtus, Smith, Clark, Inglis and Heath, the average of the last named being four for 30 in Waimea’s first innings, a very good performance. In Waimea’s second innings, Motueka fielded well and deserved credit for the way they worked. Waimea started their second innings at 1.45 and batted until 4.45 (including tea adjournment), making 297 in just 3 hours. A. Newman’s 95 was well put together and he deserves credit for his hard hitting, 4 sixes and 8 fours being included, while the batting of Jenkins (48), Papps (22), N. Hawkes (40), A. Giblin (48 not out) were all good performances. Motueka’s batting was very sound indeed and Sixtus showed old form, and was unfortunate in being run out just when lie and Ryder were becoming set. W. Whitehorn was also in good form with the bat, his fielding too being of a very high order —easily the best during the match. J. Clark treated the spectators to a fine exhibition of batting in Motueka’s second innings, liis hard hitting being much appreciated by the public; while Whitehorn, Holyoake, Barnett and Bowers all batted well.
K. Lines proved too much for Motueka in the second innings, securing five for 36. The wicket on Saturday was perfect, having dried out overnight. At the conclusion of the game the president of the Waimea Association (Mr J. Fowler) congratulated Motueka on their very fine effort. Although unsuccessful this time he hoped they had enjoyed their stay and that some day they might gain the trophy. Before asking Papps (captain) to take care of the Shield for the time (being, he called for three hearty cheers from both teams for the donors of the Shield (Mr and Mrs T. Newman), which were heartily rendered.
Papps (Waimea) and Ryder (Motueka) replied, when cheers were given for the two associations. The scores were:—
