STRANGE CONDUCT
YOUNG MAN’S PAST
SENTENCE OF IMPRISONMENT
(By Telegraph—Press Association)
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Among the extraordinary things done by Thomas Edward Preston, aged 26 years, described as a farmer, was the ordering of all kinds of goods for a marriage, although he had no marriage in view. Preston was charged before Mr Young, S.M., this morning with being an idle and disorderly person. The Magistrate, after commenting on his queer past, sentenced him to three months’ hard labour. Mr Young suggested that the prison authorities should have the man examined to inquire into his mental condition. The Chief Detective said that accused had come up from Dunedin on license, and during a months visit had been staying at different places. Although lie had no money he called at Dominion Motors and gave them a cheque for £4OO for a car for which he never took delivery. He repeated the process with Ford Motors Ltd. Then at the time of his arrest Preston was negotiating for the purchase of furniture.
