COUNTY COUNCIL ORDINARY MONTHLY MEETING The ordinary meeting of the Takaka County .Council was held in the County Chambers, Takaka, when there was a lull attendance of members. The following correspondence was among that dealt with : Fell and Tlarley wrote regarding road Malison’s to Mac Shane’s. The letter was received.

The Town Planning Institute wrote regarding joining the Institute.—The letter was received.

The New Zealand Counties’ Association wrote regarding model by-Jaws.—lt was resolved that the clerk obtain one copy. A letter was read from the Main Highways Board concerning the maintenance’of roads during the Christmas period.—The letter was received. The Department of Labour wrote regarding the fixing of the statutory halfholiday.—The letter was received. The New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Auckland, sent a circular letter re derating. It was resolved that it be received.

The Wnitomo County Council forwarded a. circular letter regarding the burden of highways taxation. It was resolved that this Council are in full accord with the subject matter as contained in the circular, and will be pleased to co-oper-ate, and this Council appeal to the Highways for relief and a. request be made to the president of the .Counties’ Association to meet and discuss the matter with the Government at the earliest opportunity. ENGINEER’S REPORT

The County Engineer reported on works under his supervision as follows :

Waitapu Riding.-—Repairs to Tarakolie Gully road, also repairs to Tarakolie road have been attended to. The power grader has been, operating on Pohara road and Caves road. Approximately five days’ work for one man is required to put road near cut-off leading to Pigeon Saddle in order. Anatoki Riding.—A wooden culvert on Hamama road lias been repaired. As soon as concrete pipes aro available I propose renewing old wood culvert on Longford road. One day’s work lias been carried out to Springs road and the power grader has been working on Pu Pu road.

Main Highways.—The power grader has been operating oil all the sections of highway. An old wooden culvert on the Purainahoi section near Mr Bird’s house in a state of disrepair. I propose renewing same with 2ft 6in concrete pipes. Metalling has been carried out on Tarakohe section and a narrow cutting near Lindsay’s bridge has been widened. The contractor has made a start with the rc-construction of Poha.ra cnlvert. General.—Minor repairs havo been carried out to staging at Pu Pu. Arrangements havo been made to clear tho falls > at Waitapu wharf and a start will bo 1 made at an early date. I Iti was resolved that the work of opening the present road, Pigeon Saddle, bo carried out before the winter months. It was resolved that dog registration fees for 1931 be fixed as follows:—For each dog kept solely for herding or driving sheep or cattle 2s 6d, all other dogs 10s. It was resolved that Mr A. E. Kerr be appointed dog registrar. Councillor Harwood referred to gorse j and scrub which require clearing from! Anatimo gate to Wainui bridge.—lt was I resolved that the Engineer attend to tho 1 matter. | Councillor Reilly reported that Wai- ; nui Hill road requires widening and some granite sand placed on it. It was resolved that tho Engineer have the 1 work carried out. ! Councillor Reilly also referred to the culverting of creeks, Pigeon Saddle, and also repairs to Wainui bridge. It was resolved that the Engineer have repairs carried out to the bridge. j Councillor Sparrow referred to One Speck bridge and deviation, asking that the Engineer again inquire into the position from the Public Works Department. Councillor Page reported on Black Maori road which requires repairs. The Engineer is to attend to tho matter. , Councillor Page also referred to wharf pile which requires renewing, and reported that Mr Falconer was willing to rent the waiting shed at the warf, offering a. rental of £5 per annum. It was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the Engineer as regards letting the shed.

Deputations: —Mr W. J. Smith, postmaster, representing the Government, Mr Norriss, chairman Takaka Town Board, and Mr Warner, Returned Soldiers’ Association, were present at the invitation of the Council to consider forming an Unemployment Committee. Also, Mr F. Taylor and seven other unemployed men waited on the Council. Mr Taylor, on behalf of the unemployed, asked that a committee be set up as they were requiring relief immediately. After considerable discussion, and Mr Smith, postmaster, had explained the necessary procedure as regards the Unemployment Board, it was resolved that the Town Board, Power Board, Farmers’ Union, Returned Soldiers’ Association, and County Council be asked to appoint a representative each to form an Unemployment Relief Committee. It was resolved that the chairman be appointed to represent the Council on the Unemployment Committee. Mr Robinson, manager of the Golden Bay Cement Works, asked that the matter be reconsidered as regards agreement mont to lay a pipe line along Tarakolie road. Mr Robinson, explained the position as regards the proposed pipe line. It was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the Engineer to interview the solicitor with a view to modifying the agreement and report.
