CHANGE OF AIM
CAPITALISTS AND SOCIALISTS PRIVATE OWNERSHIP AND THE STATE (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 14th January, 8.40 a.m.) LONDON, 13th January. Discussing “What’s a Capitalist,” the “Times” expresses the opinion that Socialists are returning from the principle of the transference of capital from private hands to the State. “They have been, or are in power in several countries, and in others share the responsibility of 'government, yet nowhere outside Russia has there boon any attempt at such a transfer. Even Russia lets ihe small capitalist alone. Socialists had better admit a change of aim. They are endeavouring to lessen the gap between the rich and poor by social reforms. The aim may be good but the process if carried too far defeats itself through the excessive taxation required to pay for it.”
