EX-SERVICEMEN
PROVIDING FOR THE UNEMPLOYED CHRISTCHURCH ASSOCIATION’S RESOLUTIONS (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Resolutions instructing the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association to urge upon the Government the necessity of providing work immediately for unemployed ex-service-men, and * supporting the demand for preference, were passed at a meeting attended by approximately 200 ex-sol-diers. _ Mr G. W. Lloyd said that the Canteen Funds Board was holding over £200,000, and refused to allow the monev to be touched. A .portion, say £IO,OOO, should be used for relieving distress. The time was ripe for "touching” the Board and “touching” it hard. The dole was not going to be of great assistance to them. If the Board refused to pay out any money until 1935, as it threatened, some of them would die of starvation. The benevolent funds of the Association were almost exhausted. They stood at . about £IOO. It was decided to authorise the executive to get in touch through headquarters with the Board for the purpose of obtaining an immediate grant for the relief of distress.
