SAMOAN APPOINTMENT

SECRETARY OF NATIVE AFFAIRS

(By Telegraph—Special to “The Mail") CHR.ISTCIIUR.Cn, This Day. Mr William Mcßridgo, who lias been appointed Secretary of Native Affairs at Samoa, was 'educated at Charlton (Southland) State School, where he won a scholarship, and the Southland Boys’ High School. He subsequently passed a law examination at Canterbury College, joining the Lands and Deeds Department at Gisborne in 1912. He was transferred to Dunedin 1914. After service abroad with the New Zealand Military Forces for four and a half years, he returned to Dunedin, receiving an appointment as chief clerk in the branch there in 1920. In 1921 he was promoted to Assistant Registrar at Christchurch. Mr Mcßride has a particularly good record in the Department. He has not previously been in Samoa. He leaves Christchurch to take over his new duties next Tuesday evening.
