POLAR EXPLORATION

CLAIMS OF NORWAY SYSTEM OF POLITICALLY DIVIDING (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright) WASHINGTON, 11th January. The Norwegian Minister Mr Las Bachke discussing Polar exploration,' stated: “The Norwegian Government is firmly opposed to the system of politically dividing Arctica and Antarctica in sectors or quadrants. • Norway has not yet claimed sovereignty to territories discovered and taken possession of in her name by Amundsen at the South Pole, but considers this a valid base-for a claim to priority in the acquisition of territories. It can well be said that no other country now possesses such large economic interests in the South Polar regions as Norway.” Mr Bachke added. “This also refers to territories on both sides of Amundsen’s route to the South Pole south of Ejhvard VII .Land, including among others the Queen Maud Range, and the Government is of opinion that considerable weight should be laid on the fact that Edward VII Land was explored, mapped and occupied in the name of Norway by Prestrud, of Amundsen’s Party, in. 1911.”
