FLAX INDUSTRY
AN UNPROMISING OUTLOOK
(By Telegraph—Press Association)
FOXTON, 10th January.
A fully representative meeting of the New Zealand Flaxmillers’ Association was held here to consider applications for work in the mills.
Applications were received from the Manawatu and other districts, but they were not sufficient to permit the mills to reopen. It was pointed out that whereas the majority of Press reports stressed the point that wages in the flaxmilling industry are at the rate of 10s a day, which is the minimum rate, the actual amount that may be earned by the majority engaged in the industry is in excess of that figure. . Since the award was amended last December the market price of hemp has fallen a further £2, and the prices mentioned to-day are only nominal. In the circumstances it is doubtful if some millers will be able to start until the market improves.
