TERRIFIC HEAT WAVE

BUSH FIRES IN AUSTRALIA WIDESPREAD DAMAGE CAUSED (United Press Association—By Eleotrlc Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 12th January, 10.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The eastern part of Queensland and New South Wales sizzled yesterday under a terrific heat wave. Sydney registered 97 degrees, and Brisbane 101, but many other readings ranged from 110 to 120. Widespread damage was caused when bush fires, fanned by a strong westerly, formed a flaming cordon round Sydney. A Bov Scout’s camp in Mount Wilga valley was wiped out. The master and twelve scouts just escaped with their lives. Greatly exhausted they found their way to the nearest roadway half a mile away.
