MUSIC-LOVERS ALL
Nature makes most people musical, but through their own or somebody else’s shortcopiings the work of Nature is not often continued. Everybody who can whistle, join in hymn or chorus, enjoy a ballad concert or a gramophone performance, is musical, and ought to develop his or her gifts of appreciation. This does not demand technical knowledge, but it does demand that we should hear and perform nothing we know to be inferior music, but practise and take notice of whatever we know to be good music. This is not necessarily difficult, for much of the best music is light and of a kind that everybody can enjoy, and much of the worst is written by people who ought to know better. |
