REFERENCE TO BIRTH CONTROL
“A GRAVE SIN”
(Received 9tli January. 12.20 p.m.) LONDON. Bth January. Lengthy extracts from the Pope’s encyclical are given prominence in the newspapers. Referring to the marriage contract it says: “A wife should he subject to her husband, but subjection does not deny the liberty which belongs to a woman to view with dignity as a human being the noble office of wife, mother and companion, nor does it hid her to obey her husband’s every request when the request is unreasonable. Marriage requires a wife’s noble obedience. It declares that the sanctity of marriage is trampled and derided by all modern scientific inventions of man. and that divorce, adultery and all the basest vices are extolled. The encyclical proceeds to refer to birth control: “Women of the Catholic Church are entrusted by God to defend and preserve the chastity of the nuptial union, which lias been defiled by this foul sin. Those who indulge therein are branded with the guilt of a grave sin, and any circumstances, such as health or economic conditions, do not constitute an excuse.”
