SCRUB AND GRASS FIRES

BRIGADE CALLED THREE TIMES YESTERDAY The Nelson Fire Brigade was summoned at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon to St. Vincent street, where a hedge and grass fire at the back of a section at the Hampden street east intersection threatened a shed and a fowlhouse. However, willing helpers with buckets of water had the flames extinguished by the time the brigade arrived. At about 6.30 p.m. a scrub and grass fire on the hill behind the Pier Hotel at the Port threatened to do damage, and so the brigade was called for the third time in the day. Two leads were put on to prevent the spread of the flames.

Yesterday morning the brigade was summoned to a grass fire near the lime kiln at the Port. With grass and scrub in its present dry state the public should take every care when burning rubbish that the fire does not get out of control.
