DRAGGED BY HORSE
LABOURER SERIOUSLY HURT AUCKLAND, 6th January. Injuries to the head, chest and left arm were received by a farm labourer, Peter Maxwell, aged 24, when he was dragged for nearly half a mile' by a horse at Whitford to-day. He was brought to the Auckland Hospital. Maxwell went to catch a horse, and after doing so he held it with a halter. The animal suddenly bolted, and before Maxwell could prevent it the halter had become entwined round his legs. He was dragged round and round the paddock for some time, over a ditch, and finally through a gateway into a second paddock, where the horse continued to gallop at full speed. Another farm hand noticed Maxwell’s plight and made an attempt to stop the horse. He was unable to do so, and further help had to be enlisted, the horse finally being cornered by three men. When Maxwell was released he was conscious, but became unconscious almost immediately afterwards and did not revive for over two hours. He had been dragged for nearly half a mile, and the bumping over the rough ground had proved sufficient to rip most of the clothing from his body.
