TOBACCO AND CIGARETTES
Imports of tobacco have maintained a fairly level total for the past five years, but imports of cigarettes show a decline in tlie last two years as compared with the previous two years, states Carrol’s “New Zealand Trade Review.” This is attributed to the increasing use of the local product. To show how far this local article has come into use, quantities of tobacco and cigarettes on which excise duty has been paid for the last five years; ending with 30th September, have been taken out and compared with importations as follows: —
This shows that New Zealand consumption of tobacco lias increased in the last three years more in the local article than in tlie imported, while the decrease in importations of cigarettes is fully made up by the increase in those on which excise duty is paid. The very heavy increase in the amounts on which excise duty is paid gives evidence of the growth in local production in the lasi/ three years.
