MINERS AND RACING
NO WORK AT GREYMOUTH TWO MINES IDLE (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Coincident with the holding of the trotting meeting at Greymouth two State coal mines in the district have been rendered idle through being unable to secure enough miners to work the shifts. Both the James and the Liverpool mines were to have re-opened after the holidays on Monday, but it has so far proved impossible to get the miners to return to work. Not one man reported at either mine yesterday, on the second day of the race meeting and only a few put in an appearance on Monday. The average daily output of the two mines totals about 900 tons, of which 700 tons are taken from the Liverpool mine. It is estimated that the total loss in wages for the two days will be about £6OO.
