CHARGE OF THEFT

(By Telegr&ph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, sth January. On 19th December a fire broke out in a fourteen-roomed house in Shortland street. The owner was absent in England, but ten days later, when her brother went to the house, he found that all the internal fittings had gone, and the garage had been removed bodily. To-day, Leslie Clifton Arthur Payne, a labourer, was committed for trial on a charge of stealing timber and fittings, valued at £350. Evidence was given by a man that lie and two other men had been employed for several • days in demolishing the house. The man, who gave the name of Payne, said he had authority to pull down the house. Payne did not work himself, .but called each morning and gave instructions. The police produced a stat onent, allegedly made by the accused, admitting that he knew he was not authorised to demolish the house.
