MOTUEKA

TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL TOURNAMENT The annual tournament of the MoLueka Lawn Tennis Association was played on the Ist, 2nd and 3rd January. Good weather prevailed on Thursday and Friday but oil Saturday afternoon a strong gusty wind made play difficult. Entries were up to the average, although the association would have appreciated more support from the ladies. On the first two days of the tournament the four courts of the Motueka Tennis Clbu were continuously occupied. The club grounds, which have recently been beautified with the addition of flower beds and neatly kept lawn, were much admired by the visitors. Handicapping, in most cases, was very satisfactory and many close finishes resulted. A high standard of play was witnessed, and, as the tournament progressed the standard still improved. The most outstanding performances were those of K. Holyoake, who won three finals—championship doubles and handicap doubles partnered with Rogers and combined championship doubles partnered with Miss T. Barnett. H. Rankin accounted for Holyoake in good style in the championship singles going on to beat Allcott in the final after a very closely contested match. Mrs Nightingale reached the finals in five events but had bad luck in being beaten in four of these, and the fifth remains unplayed. Silke played himself into form during the tournament by revealing some fine low volleying, while K. Taylor (a junior) distinguished himself by winning -the men’s handicap singles and both junior events. Mrs Craig won three finals —championship doubles, and handicap doubles partnered with Mrs Johnston and combined handicap doubles partnered with Drogemuller, while she is a finalist in the ladies’ handicap singles. The tournament manager, Mr H. G. Johnston, and the committee, Messrs A. G. Nightingale, E. L. Glover, K. Holyoake, H. Rankin and P. G. Craig, were responsible for the successful organising of the tournament, and great satisfaction was expressed at matches being played well to time. Afternoon tea was provided by the Association and much appreciated by all.
