THE CHIEF EVENT DESCRIBED GLENROWAN DEFEATS CATERPILLAR IN CUP (By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail") CHRISTCHURCH. 2nd January. For the Invercargill Cup the best backed were Red Sea, .Mount Boa. and Town Major. From a good start Caterpillar was first to show out. and she led Camisader, Glenrowan, Salmo Salar and Mount Boa through the straight, (he first two furlongs inking 25 2-5 see. Going into the hack .stretch Caterpillar was still howling along in front and at Hie far turn was leading Camisader, Mount Boa. Glenrowan and Salrno Salar, the six furlongs taking 1.16 1-5. Celerity 11. and Night, Maid were lying last at this stage. Racing across the top Salrno Salar made a forward move, liul.it was short-lived and Caterpillar was just in front of Mount Boa, Glenrowan, and Salrno Salai as they turned into the straight. At the distance Glenrowan challenged Caterpillar and ill a- good finish heat her home by a short length. Town Major, who was hadlv placed right iq> to the turn for home, finished very fast and got to within half a length of Caterpillar. Celerity 11. and Red Sea were next. Then came Salrno Salar and Camisader.
