Investments on the totalisator amounted to £56,023 as compared with £84,761 10s for the fourth day last year, making a total for the meeting of £282,557, as against £352,436 last year. THE RACING DESCRIBED COIIINAX WINS IN GREAT ,FINISH (By Telegraph— Special to "The Mail”) AUCKLAND, 2nd January. Four withdrawals left a field of 14 to line lip for the Grandstand Handicap, and Hunting Cry was made a solid favourite, carrying £2229. He never got in the picture, and was always near the tail of the field once tile horses had properly settled down. The winner was the second favourite Corinax (£1210), while Silvermine was third fancy with £767. Lucy Rose, who finished second, carried £SOB. Passing the stand the first time Lucy Rose was showing in front from Silvermine, Eager Rose, Corinax. Hunting Cry, Mosque and Jaloux, while My Own was pulled up and did not continue on in the race. Along the hack Lucy Rose was piloting the field just clear of Silvermine, Mosque, Eager Rose. Gay Cockade. Sir Mond, Corinax, Hunting Cry, Count Palatine and Jaloux. Mosque was in front crossing the top from Gay Cockade, hut the latter then dashed to the front and was well clear turning into the straight from Silvermine. Mosque, Lucy Rose, Eager Rose and Corinax. In the straight, Gay Cockade looked like seeing it out, hut both Corinax and Lucy Rose threw out strong
challenges, ami in a .great finish Corinax got the decision by a neck from Lucy Rose, with Gay Cockade a neck away. Silvermine was fourth, followed by Spearmiss Count Palatine, Eager Rose, Mosque-, Sir Mond, and Jaloux.
AMMON RA DEFEATS LA POUPEE
Nine scratcliings left a field of seven to go to the post Jin’ the Royal Slakes, and in a fine betting race Ammon Ra was the favourite, carrying £l9Bl. La Poupee carried £1729, and Movie Star £1306. Movie Star and Princess Bede were quickest away from llkloy. Gay Court, -Aspian, Ammon Ra and La Popper. Across the top Aspian and Movie Star were together in the lead irom Gay Court, Princess .Bede, La Poupee, Ammon Ra and Jlkloy. Luo the straight Aspian had an advantage over Movie Star and Gay Court, who were together, with .Ammon Ra and La Poupee together next. A great race home between Ammon Ra and Ra Poupee saw the first named win by a neck. Aspian was half a length away third, and then followed Movie Star, Princess Bede, Gay Court and llkloy. NIGIITMARCLI'S TURN limiting Cry was the only withdrawal from the Clifford Plate, leaving a one dividend field to go to the post. Pegaway was the favourite with £2062, Night march carrying £2026 and Concentrate £752. Nightmarch Jed out of the straight and the pace was slow. Concentrate was second to him with Rady Pam, Pogaway and Toxeuma following. Except that. Toxeuma closed up a little l.lie order was the same along the hack. Crossing the toil Nightmarch was still tile leader from Concentrate, Pogaway, Lady Pam, and Toxeuma. Toxeuma and Lady Pam closed on Nightmarch racing to the homo turn, and there was little between them turning into the straight. In the run to the judge Nightmarch drew out and won by a length and a quarter from Lady Pain, with Concentrate threequarters of a length away third. Toxeulna was next and Pogaway last.
HAWKES BAY JOCKEY CLUB BOLD FRONT TAKES NEW YEAR HANDICAP ONE TO SYLVAN DELL HASTINGS, 2nd January. The concluding results on the second day of the Ilawkes Bay Jockey Club's meeting were as follows: Electric Handicap, of 100 sovs; six furlongs.—2 Jazz King. 8.4, 1; 3 Lady Makerc, 8.7. 2; 5 Night Speaker, 8.6. 3. Scratched : Star of Gold. Won by half a length. Time, 1.14 3-5. January Handicap, of 130 sovs: six furlongs ami a half.—s Taliomn, 7.9. 1; 3 Psycho. 7.5, 2; 1 Cuticle, 9.8. 3. All started. Won by a length. Time, 1.22.
