SAVED FROM DROWNING
ON MURIWAI BEACH .a CARRIED AWAY BY UNDERTOW (By. Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, This Day. Gladys Pidgeon, the Empire Games swimmer, her brother Ronald, aged 18, and James Kempster, the English dirt track rider, played a part in rescuing two surf bathers from drowning at Muriwai beach at midday yesterday. About thirty people were bathing, including Robert Cameron and S. W. Barton, both aged 18, who were caught in a strong undertow and carried away. Cameron’s cries for help were heard by Miss Pidgeon, who with her brother swam out and after a hard struggle brought him back to shallow water, where others assisted with a chain of hands. At this .moment it was noticed Barton also was in trouble and Kempster swam out and rescued him in similar fashion. Both Cameron and Barton were completely exhausted, but soon recovered. ‘‘l did not think wo would ever get ashore,” said Miss Pidgeon. ‘‘Fortunately Cameron kept his head and did not struggle. It was lucky there was someone else there to help Barton.”
