MOTUEKA

SUCCESSFUL HIGHLAND GATHERING The Motueka Caledonian Society held its seventh annual Highland Gathering on New Year’s Day in glorious weather; and, with a record number of competitors taking part in the day’s programme, a most successful and enjoyable meeting resulted. Although tlie great crowd of supporters, who foregathered at the beautiful Domain Reserve, did not quite equal last year’s crowd in numbers, yet tlie Society feel thoroughly gratified with tlie results, and spectators more than satisfied with the wonderfully clever and graceful dancing and the excellent piping of some of New Zealand's best exponents. The crowd was a most appreciative one and interest never waned throughout tlie long day’s procedings. Splendid organisation was displayed in tlie methodical carrying out of the programme by officials working harmoniously for the success of the gathering. Much labour and great preparations were necessary in connection with a function of this magnitude; and for many weeks members of the executive have worked untiringly under the leadership of their capable chief, Mr Jock Thomson, and their very energetic vicepresident, Mr Jock Brough, to make tlie day a successful one. Secretarial duties were in the hands of Messrs B. V. Warren and Eric Trevena. For the piping events Mr J. Topp (Motueka) acted as judge and for the dancing Mr S. O’Hara (Waimea West). During the luncheon hour the beautiful trees of the Domain afforded plenty of shade for picnicing parties; and full advantage was taken of the hot water supplied free. Refreshments and afternoon teas were also procurable on the grounds at Mr Hart’s stall. As a result of piping and dancing, cups were awarded as follows: “Sandy McDonald” Cup (most points in entries—open marches, strathspeys and laments): A. Guild, Blenheim. Waters Cup (Marches novice): S. Chisholm, Christchurch. Bowers’ Cup (most points in open class Highland dancing): D. 11. Botliwell, Masterton.
