DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP THE FIFTH ROUND (Bj Telegraph—Press Association) ROTORUA, This Day. The following were the games in the fifth round of the New Zealand chess tourney: — Herbert v. Gyles.—Herbert piyyed Guvoco Piano, but in exchanging minor pieces gave Gyles a pawn advantage. Gyles gradually improved his position and scored an easy win. Grierson v. Greenfield.—This was a very well played Carokann game. The positions seemed fairly even till the end of the middle game, when Greenfield revealed his attack, which Grierson was. unable lo withstand, resigning the move at 31. Severne v. Erskine. — In a Sicilian opening, Erskine obtained a better position, init in the middle game the exchanges gave Severne an improved Queenside position. There was a long stern fight, and the game ended in a draw.

Maddox v. Miller.—Quite a lively game from Bird’s opening. Positions were quite even until the end of the game, when Miller skilfully outplayed Maddox and scored a win.

Kelling v. Pleasants. —This Buy Lopez was a spirited game, the outcome of an error in Pleasant’s opening. Kelling sacrificed a knight for a pawn and cleverly brought up his forces to break down Pleasant’s defence and checkmated on the thirtieth move. Kummer v. Fairburn.—French defence in which Kummer broke through with Queen and rook along open Kings rookefilo. Fairburn was soon ill difficulty, and his counter-attack failed to stave oil defeat.

Erskine, 4 wins, 1 draw, 4j,- points; Severne, 3 wins, 2 draws, 4 points; Gyles, 4 wins, 1 loss, 4 points; Maddox, 2 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss, 3 points ; Kelling, 3 wins, 2 losses, 3 points; Greenfield, 3 wins, 2 losses, 3 points; Miller, 2 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses. 2£ points; Fairburn, 2 wins, 3 losses, 2 points; Kummer, 1 win, 1 draw, 3 iosses; 14 points; Pleasant, 1 win, 1 draw, 3 losses, If points; Grierson, 1 win, 4 losses, 1 point; Herbert, 5 losses.
