POWER FROM SHANNON

IRISH FREE STATE VENTURE

DUBLIN, 22nd July. An important step towards the completion of the Irish Free State's £6,000,000 hydro-electric scheme, in which its h.opcs of economic salvation arc bound up,, will be taken to-morrow. The President of the Dail, -Mr W. T. Cosgrave, will press a button and by so doing open the sluice gates at Parteen, County Clare, through which the River Shannon's waters will swerve from their ancient course into a long canal, leading to the great electricity works at Ardna Crush a.

It is hoped that, by the end of the year, giant turbines will be working, radiating cheap light, heat and power throughout the Free State.
