WAKATU PUT UP GOOD FIGHT
As was to be expected the PirateWakatu game was not of a very exciting nature. Wakatu arrived on the field without a full team but aided by Wells and Sutton.of the Waimeas, they put up a willing fight against their heavier opponents. Some of the Pirate players however, knowing that the game was theirs in any case, seemed inclined to take things easy. The game opened with dull play around the half way line till Hunt dribbled through to the Wakatu 25 but Wallace saved. Eden made a good run through and sent the ball to Fowler who was collared. A penalty was awarded to Pirates in front of the goal and Bowers sent the ball across the bar.
After the kick out a good rush by Wakatu backs ended in Pirates' 25, Chapman being collared. Papps and Best made good runs for Pirates, both fending powerfully. Best looked dangerous in a second run, but Chapman had learned a- painful lesson and this time,' went low. From a scrum Fowler worked the blind and sent the ball to Best, who went over at the corner with Chapman and Russell hanging on. Best missed with the kick.
Kus.se]) ran 50 yards, but his pass was knocked on and a score lost. A penally to Wakatu saw Wells hit the bar from outside the 25 near touch.
Pirates livened up, and after a combined rush Best, centred to Higgins, who came through, but the whistle brought him back. Sutton took play upfield, but the Pirate forwards, headed by Max, Hum and Higgins, took the ball over ilie lint", Wakatu forcing. Wakatu carried the play to Pirates' 25, where Wells picked up and scored a try. Wallace's kick fell short. After the kick out Fowler set his backs going, Best being pushed into touch close to tliiv goal line. The half-time whistle brought relief for Wakatu. Immediately after resuming Bpwers found an opening and sent the ball to Max. who scored under the posts. Bowers's kick failed.
Grigg, with a good run. entered Pirate territory and after a scramble Hollyman secured the ball and .ran through for a good try. Wallace missed with the kick. At this stage Rowers ami Eden both had fruitless attempts to pot. The next piece of bright play came when Fowler flipped through in characteristic fashion for a try. Papps's kick just missed. Wakatu continued In persevere and the. hacks threw I he hall about, as a result Chapman nearly getting over. SulInn made desperate efforts In score, Iml, Fowler's collaring was deadly.
