NELSON BEAT OLD BOYS
PATCHY GAME AT TRAFALGAR PARK
The Nelson-Old Boy senior match was played on No. 1 ground at Trafalgar Park'. Nelson winning by 14 points to 3. But for a try by Nelson, in the second spell, the scoring was done before half time. The teams were as follows: — Nelson—McGinley, Sexton, Reed (capt.)j White, Smith, Phillips, Poteete, Young, W. Snow, Barton, 11. Snow, Blincoe, Walsh, Taylor, and Edwards. Old Boys—Alabin, F. Snodgrass (capt.), Bell, Fowler, Adams, C. Snodgrass, Simpson, James, Dalgleish, Scott, Svmonds, Murphy, Sutch, Everett, and Busch. From the kick off Nelson, carried play to the Old Boys’ 25, the forwards following a centre, by Reed. Reed missed with a penally kick from a handy position. The Nelson forwards put sting into the play and had the best of the deal for a spell. After about ten minutes play Nelson booked the ball in front of the'posts, Poteete sending the leather to Phillips who beat Bell and ran over for a try which Reed failed to convert. — Nelson 3, Old Boys 0. The Nelson backs showed good form from the .start and after 20 minutes Poleete eleverlv dummied J ames. the ball going on to Phillips, Smith, Reed and Sexton who streaked in for a try. It was a very fine movement. Poteete converted. Nelson 8, Old Boys 0. Young opened up the play with a dash to the 25 from half way and sent the ball out with a “Snow" pass a chain across the field to Reed who went on and sent Sexton away for his second try. Sexton missed with the kick at goal. Nelson 11, Old Boys 0. Snodgrass opened Old Boys scoring account with a big kick from a penalty. Oni Boys 3, Nelson 11. This was the half time score. The Old Boy forwards improved for a while hut Nelson gradually wore them down and after a ruck near the line 11. Snow picked up and sent to Sexton who battled over with three Old Boys hanging on. Poteete missed from the sideline. Nelson 14, Old Boys 3. The play became willing, especially in flic rucks. Then after a mill in front of the stand and in full view of the referee Blincoe made a wild punch at an Old Boy for which Referee Croucher ordered him off the field. Through the superb booking of Walsh and Taylor the. Nelson backs bad the ball when it was not among the forwards, calling for sound Old Boy defence. • Time and again the Nelsons, both backs and forwards, invaded • the Old Boy due, but timely defence kept them cut. Daring the game there was some very poor and some very good tackling. Towards the end Old Boys livened up considerably and several times made dashes which came near to adding points, but they could not finish off. The play throughout was hard, but from a spectator’s point of view . the game was not a good one. Mr A. Croucher was the referee. Old Boys v.ero penalised five times and Nelson on right occasions.
