BIRTHDAY GATHERING

NEWMAN BROS. LTD. AND STAFF

A very pleasing function took place in the Presbyterian Hall, when the members and staff of the firm of Ylessrs Newman Bros., Ltd., combined to celebrate his birthday and do honour to Ylr Jack Leahy, the oldest member now on the staff. Ylr and Ylrs Leahy and family were accompanied to the hall, which was 'gaily decorated for the occasion, to the stirring strains of the bagpipes, and the evening’s entertainment opened with tho grand march, after which followed recitations, games and competitions. A sumptuous supper was served, and a beautiful birthday cake, the gift of Ylrs T. Newman, held a prominent place on the supper table. Mr T. Newman, in a few well chosen words presented Ylr Leahy with a unique 14-day clock suitably inscribed and wished him long life and continued happiness. Mr Jack. Newman, on behalf of the family, said they could not let the occasion pass without doing their part, and handed Ylr Leahy a solid leather suitcase from his sister, brothers, and himself, and wished “Jack” prosperity in the future and hoped h e would long continue amongst them. Then followed a presentation by Ylr T. Pauling, made on behalf of the combined branches of the staff. He handed Ylr Leahy a beautiful travelling rug, and with it • went the .very best wishes of his fellow employees. Ylr Pauling eulogised the many good qualities of Ylr Leahy as a fellow worker. Other members of the staff endorsed the remarks made by Ylr Pauling regarding the friendly and helpful qualities of Mr Leahy and several very pleasing references were made to Ylrs Leahy and family.

The toast of Mr and -Mrs Leahy and family was drunk to loud applause, and the singing of “For He’s a Jo-lly Good Fellow” and “God Save the King” brought to a close a most pleasant evening, which will long be remembered.
